Too Much

Over at Apartment Therapy there is a post about room design being overdone. They have a few examples, and honestly, all of the rooms they show from the recent San Francisco house tours are all overdone. Well, in my lonely opinion anyway. I was reading through a few of the comments and was surprised by a description of showroom design being excessively overdone. As with graphic design, interior design, should hold true to the hierarchy of the design itself. There is a headline or image that should tell almost the entire story without you having to read the rest of the ad. Then there are support elements that support the headline. Room design is no different. If you have a kick-ass sofa, awesome paintings, and killer lamps, where is the focal point? The whole room? NO! That is not what design is about. If that were the case you could jam pack the entire room with individually interesting items and be done with it. Design is a process of editing a style and creating a feeling and esthetic that you want the room to have. Find a few select items, colors, or pieces and build the room around those. You will most assuredly see a difference.

I totally agree, Kirk. That room has some incredible pieces, but you can't even see them because there is too much everything! Good post....from one minimalist to another!!!
