I have photographed fireworks dozens of times. This fourth of July I wasn't even really interested in photographing the fireworks. But then I got the idea to try something new. Why not try something a little more abstract and focus more on the lights and the patterns instead of trying to capture the classic firework tracers. I was initially inspired by a series of photos I saw in Banana Republic a few years ago. They had a series of out of focus light sources of different colors. Since then I have taken similar photos and for some reason they really appeal to me. Catching the different firework patterns was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the result. Here's to seeing things differently.

Very cool!
I'll cheers to that! These are cool, thank you!
So cool! What settings did you have to have on your camera? I would love to try that.
looks to me like as low an f-stop as possible for whichever lens it was, and a relatively quick shutter with the fireworks themselves intentionally out of focus.
Hey Skyler. Good to see you. Jan, Skyler is right. I was using the 18-200 at f/5.6. I was shooting manual and don't remember the shutter speed. It was fast enough to stop the motion and not have the light blown out. And of course manual focus. Kind of fun.
Reminds me of squinting at christmas lights!
