I don't know if you remember but Skip had his tools on pegboards/plywood and then traced around each tool so that it was really easy to replace - as a child I was always fascinated by that!
I do remember that. Someday I would like to do something similar. Mom gave me his tool chest a few years ago and it would be cool to lay them all out in similar fashion.
I agree with Gretch, a peg board should do the trick for most of your tools you can just attach it to the wall of the garage or utility room and add hooks.
