What the Holga?

Do you ever miss taking pictures with film? I don't very often, but every once in a while I enjoy breaking out the 35mm and shooting a roll or two. You know, just for geewizzie. A couple of weeks ago I was on Flickr and saw some pretty interesting photos from a photographer using a Holga. A what? A HOLGA! It's this ultra expensive, super high tech medium format camera. OK, I lied. It costs $20 and is about as high tech as my hat. Literally. It leaks light, has almost no control, and most of your photos will probably end up like crap. Hey... it's a great adventure and you just might end up with some pretty cool (interesting) photos. Well, I bought one about a week ago and a few rolls of film. Talk about fun! I have never shot any medium format film, so that was kind of interesting. Let me tell you, the Internet is awesome. Just Google anything and you get an instant answer to your question. So I read all about using a Holga, adding tape to block out light leaks, and winding medium format film. Sweet! I shot two rolls, 24 shots. Ha ha. 24 SHOTS! Please. I rattle off that many photos in less than 3 seconds with my Nikon. Did I mention that the Holga is completely manual? Well... kind of. It doesn't really have any controls to set. One shutter speed, two apertures, and four focal distances. No focusing? Come on, you can't have everything. Buy one. You will love it. I got my photos back from the lab today and am pleasantly surprised. I guess I didn't know what to expect because you hear so many horror stories online. Whatever. I had a blast and can't wait to go out and shoot my Holga some more.

I absolutely LOVE this photos! They looked very antique and you know I love antique stuff. So super cool. I might have to get myself a Holga and get another lesson from you. BTW, the City/County building that you shot is one of my all time favorite buildings. I miss seeing it everyday. Thanks for sharing your fun adventure.
geewizzie? That is the best word ever! I have a new favorite! Love it!
OK superstar where would one buy a Holga because those pics are awesome!
I'm counting on some awesome family fotos this summer at Bear Lake...so get ready!!
Oh, and by the way...I think you and Jill would be the only ones that know what 'leaks light' would mean. Does it actually drip out of the camera? Cool!
Thanks for the comments you two. Shooting a Holga is so strange to shoot. Jill was over today and laughed out loud when I handed it to her. It really is like a toy. I would buy mine from www.bhphotovideo.com. That is where I buy most of my photography gear. They have a few different versions, but I bought their simple version, the Holga 120N. There are probably a bunch of local locations that sell medium format film. Let me know if you get one and I will go over some of the more interesting aspects of using this beauty. Enjoy.
